Metal Roofing

There’s no question that metal roofing is one of the best roofing choices around. It won’t ever rot, split, or warp, it can provide your home with some serious energy savings, and it can last for decades, but that doesn’t mean it’s indestructible!

Metal roofs need to be inspected every year, just like every other kind of roof. The spring is the best time to do it!

Here are some tips for maintaining your roof this spring season so you can get many more years out of your metal roof.

Look for Rust

There are a lot of things a metal roof won’t do. It won't succumb to the UV rays of the sun, the heat won't rot it, and the rain won't cause it to split or warp. However, rust is a possibility with metal roofs. If present, it can cause your roof to deteriorate quickly.

The only way to tell if your roof is developing rust is to get up there and check things out. If you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, it’s a good idea to hire a team of local roofers who know the signs of rust, even if it’s lurking on the backside of your metal shingles.

Inspect Vent Pipes and the Chimney

No matter what kind of roof you have, it’s a good idea to inspect the vent pipes and the chimney. It is very easy for the seal around these features to become compromised. Look for gaps, cracks, and missing caulk.

You can use a pair of binoculars from the ground to examine the trim and flashing around the outside of your roof. You may even be able to tell if there are cracks in your chimney from the ground.
